What is the Shadow?

Richard Rohr describes the Shadow as “the part of us that we do not want to see, our unacceptable self by reason of nature, nurture, and choice.” Barry Michels, co-author of The Tools, refers to it as "everything we don’t want to be but fear we are, represented in a single image. It’s called the Shadow because it follows us wherever we go."

This transformative workshop invites men to take the emotional risk of confronting their “inner yuck” and to begin developing a relationship with the Shadow. Why do this challenging work? Because facing your Shadow can unlock the following:

  • Confidence: Turning insecurity into self-assuredness.

  • Stillness and Wisdom: Transforming loneliness into introspection.

  • Inspired Action: Redirecting anger into healthy, warrior-like energy.

  • Inner Authority & Independence: Releasing the hold of people-pleasing tendencies.

What You’ll Experience

This workshop is designed for beginners. No prior Shadow work or completion of the Men’s Rites of Passage (MROP) is necessary. The drop-in course allows participants to attend as many sessions as possible without pressure.

We will explore the following topics over the course of seven sessions:

Session Schedule

  • Jan 15: Introduction to the Shadow

  • Feb 5: The Shadow and Your Inner Enemy

  • Feb 19: Shadow Origins

  • Mar 5: The Insecure Shadow

  • Mar 19: The Lonely Shadow

  • Apr 2: The Evil Shadow

  • Apr 23: Ongoing Shadow Work (Note: Adjusted date to avoid spring break/Easter week)
