One of the things I appreciate about Richard Rohr’s writings is that they help me see things from a different perspective. It’s so easy to get stuck inside the same day-to-day pattern of living, focusing on the nitty gritty details. Richard’s writings, especially his daily meditations, help me see things from a different point of view and focus on what’s really important.
For the past 22 years I’ve been going camping and canoeing in the wilderness areas of Minnesota and Ontario at least once a year and often twice. Getting away into the wilderness does the same thing for me as Richard’s writings. The change of scenery, the change of pace, and the simpler lifestyle help me calm down. Seeing the beauty of nature and being active all day refreshes me and helps me think about the larger issues of life.
Not all of us are cut out for the wilderness experience, but we can all find ways to get away from the daily routine, to step back, get refreshed, and focus on what’s really important in our lives. For some it could be a drive in the country, walking, or biking. For others it could be listening to music, working in the lawn or garden, or a daily time of meditation. Whatever form it takes, taking a regular break in our routine, getting outdoors if at all possible, can help refresh us and connect us to our larger life.
