Not Without a Fight (Vernal Equinox)

 

Winter

 

still and colorless

movement is suspended above 

and transferred below

into darkness

 

no sunlight here,

another kind of energy,

mysterious and essential,

is brewing

 

time of governance

calming wild spring, 

defusing summer extravagance,

dampening the clinging loss of autumn

 

through deep, dark interconnection

this alchemy quietly sifts,

dissolves, collects, builds, 

undistracted by light

 

but then… 

 

there are rumblings.

Revolt foments as orbit

brings tilt toward sun

and light inches into dominance

 

soon the rule of winter

will be challenged

everywhere

 

and there will be a fight

 

no easy relinquishing

despite endless cycles

over millennia 

 

the same struggle repeats

 

light penetrates darkness

warmth infiltrates the cold

and winter wrestles

with wounding angels

 

 

no ease in letting change advance.

This quiet, frozen governor

must be thawed

and overthrown

        

war is declared

lightning, hail, tornado

combatants 

at the front lines

there are casualties

 

outcome always the same

as new life and color 

come forth and entice,

fed by suffering and pain

 

not without a fight
